Snack Attack Grade 6
The previous lesson that I chose hasn't been taught for a few years. In fact, Nutrition hasn't been taught in the 6th grade at the middle school for a few years. One of my department's goals this year is to update the middle school's Nutrition curriculum. Following is the lesson which was last taught to grade 6 at Blake Middle School.

Most of the lesson consists of discussion and doing handouts. The lesson takes 2-3 class sessions to complete. Students meet for 45 min. once a week.

Topics to be Covered
1. What exactly IS nutrition?
2. Review of the SIX BASIC FOOD GROUPS.
3. How SNACKS fit into a balanced diet.
4. How to READ NUTRITION LABELS on food (SNACK) packages.

Objectives of the Lesson
1. The student will be able to define the term NUTRITION.
2. The student will review his/her knowledge of the SIX basic food groups.
3. The student will understand how SNACKS can contribute to or detract from a healthy eating lifestyle.
4. The student will examine their own SNACK CHOICES and how they STACK UP against those recommended by the American Diet and Nutrition Council.

Activities
1. The Slippery Noodle Sheet
An intro activity. Students are given a paper with instructions to write a story of what it would be like to be a Slippery Noodle on someone's plate of spaghetti and sauce. Stories are then shared.
2. Food Choices: MIne or Others"?
Worksheet. A worksheet of 10 fill in the blank statements including: what do you eat to impress people, what do you eat with family, with friends, favorite thing to eat, etc. Discuss responses and how food choices can be influenced by many things, and some they may not even be aware of.
3. Snack Foods I Like to Eat
Worksheet. Students write down all the snack foods they like to eat.
4. Snack Attack Food Chart
Worksheet. Students will write down all their snacks in the appropriate Food Group Box.
5. Snack Attack Survey Questions
Discuss definition of nutrition. Discuss foods on snack lists, what groups most foods fell into, most nutritious choices, those high in sugar, calories, fats, sodium, etc. Also discuss choices may be based on allergies, money, cultures, likes, dislikes. Review NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION found on labels on food/snack packages that the students have listed.
6. Snack Attack Substitute Sheet
Handout. Go over the 2 lists: 1. Eat fewer of these snacks and 2. Eat more of these snacks.
